Burned

Cafú died in hospital a week after being set on fire. A 29 year-old man has been arrested in connection with her murder.
Cafú was 34 years old, a trans woman, and lived in San Ramón de la Nueva Orán. She died on September 26 after spending several days hospitalized with severe burns suffered in an incident that is under investigation. A 29-year-old woman was arrested and linked to the case. Trans and gender-diverse organizations are demanding justice and respect for her self-perceived gender identity.
“We all knew her as La Cafú ,” said Ivana González, coordinator and one of the representatives of the LGBT community of Orán.
González explained that La Cafú presented herself socially as a woman and that this was how she was recognized by those around her. “She worked as a woman, spoke like a woman, and behaved like a woman. When they found her, she was wearing women's clothing and is considered a [trans woman]. I don't think she underwent a transition process, but she called herself La Cafú,” she recounted.
Ivana González clarified that the community does not seek to impose labels on each person's identity. In the case of La Cafú, she maintained that she was recognized as a trans woman and that her chosen name was part of how she presented herself and was known in Orán.
For her, the fact that La Cafú has not made a registered change of her name does not allow us to ignore her gender identity.
“Many girls don’t change their documents for different reasons. Sometimes they don’t make the change when they are minors. Many are misinformed about the paperwork and don’t complete that part because of the procedures, mainly because of everything the process entails, especially in these times when they are trying to take away our rights, all those things, even more so ,” she explained.
