Luciana Centeno was 40 years old and an activist with Asociación de Travestis Trans de Argentina (ATTA) in Jesús María. For years she was at the forefront of the fight to defend the trans community in Córdoba.
Talking about Luciana requires more than simply reconstructing the circumstances of her death. It requires discussing a community that has been denouncing abandonment, violence, and a lack of support resources. And it requires discussing the responsibility of the State and governments in the face of a reality that neither began with Luciana nor ends with her.
That's why what happened in Jesús María requires deeper analysis, because, particularly in the trans community, life expectancy is no more than 40 years. Limited access to employment, a life of poverty, exclusion from their own homes from a young age, not to mention discrimination, violence, and all forms of mental abuse, are the conditions that lead to this alarming mortality rate.
All these conditions lead to [sex work] being the last resort for survival in this society. This is a clear reflection of state neglect and responsibility.
