On August 29, Aleja Naranjo Cuesta, a 17-year-old transgender teenager, was found murdered and showing signs of torture in a house in the La Iguaná neighborhood of Medellín. Volcánicas confirmed the young woman's gender identity and chosen name; she preferred to use only her mother's last name and be called Aleja Cuesta. Authorities have not yet identified those responsible.
Aleja lived in the La Aurora neighborhood with her grandmother, but spent some weekends at her mother's house in the La Iguaná neighborhood.
Last Saturday, upon returning from her job as a live-in domestic worker, Aleja's mother became worried when she hadn't heard from her daughter. When she tried to contact her, a man answered and told her that her cell phone had been pawned in downtown Medellín. When she arrived home, she had to force the door open and found her daughter in one of the bedrooms, lying on the floor with a pillowcase in her mouth and signs of torture. The teenager was taken to the Pablo Tobón Uribe Hospital in the Robledo neighborhood, but arrived without vital signs.
It must be clarified whether the murder was motivated by prejudice based on the victim's gender identity, and the case should be investigated as a possible transfemicide.
We demand justice for Aleja and for all LGBT+ children and adolescents who are victims of violence in Colombia !
