Mavis was a student animator and film director. Reportedly her death was connected to long term suicidal ideation and more recent harassment.
we lost mavis joshi (instagram @latenightmavie) to suicide due to long term suicidal ideation and more recent harassment. she was an indian trans woman and studying to be an animator, creator of the student animated film Suicideland, which she posted a short month before she died.
Suicideland is a 10-minute animated short film following a 15-year-old girl named Amrita who, after experiencing an abusive household, finds herself navigating an atypical afterlife. As well as writing and directing, Mavis also voiced the main protagonist.
In addition to her creative work, Mavis also actively participated in local creative community projects such as the Monsoon Blitz public AR street art exhibition in Bengaluru's Koramangala area.
