Vica was murdered in her home by a man she had arranged to meet there. She was an architect who several years earlier had founded Fuma Espuma - Córdoba's first gay soccer team.
Vica Monteros, a 44-year-old trans architect and a leading figure in the LGBTIQ+ community of Córdoba, was murdered with 37 stab wounds in her home in the Alberdi neighborhood.
Police arrested a 27-year-old man on Wednesday, identified as Maximiliano "Vasco" Sallito, who is now behind bars as the main suspect.
The victim's family, originally from Tucumán, was emphatic: "It's a hate crime," attributing the attack to her gender identity. Monteros had founded Córdoba's first gay soccer team years earlier.
According to preliminary investigations, the two had arranged to meet at the victim's home. After committing the crime, the assailant allegedly turned on the gas and set the house on fire to conceal the crime, before fleeing with valuables.
Residents of calle Mendoza noticed the smoke, knocked on the door, and when there was no answer, broke it down. Once inside, they managed to extinguish the fire and found Monteros's body.
The first trace of the suspect emerged from conversations found on the victim's computer. The prosecution analyzed security camera footage and traced the route of the Uber that Sallito had hired hours before the crime.
Prosecutor Guillermo González, of District Attorney's Office 1, Shift 2, charged Sallito with "homicide aggravated by cruelty and treachery".
The body showed bruising and multiple stab wounds. According to investigators, "the killer wasn't satisfied with seeing the lifeless body, but continued attacking until the knife broke. "
