La Peli was shot in the street by an unknown assailant on a motorcycle. She was 31 years old.
The murder of a trans woman, legally identified as [deadname], 31, which occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, January 15, in the La Nevada neighborhood, in Valledupar, unleashed the rejection of human rights defenders, who demanded greater security guarantees and concrete actions by local authorities.
According to the Valledupar Metropolitan Police, the event took place around 5:15 in the afternoon on Carrera 48 with Calle 6-8, where the victim was attacked with a firearm by a subject who was traveling on a motorcycle and who, according to witnesses, fired indiscriminately before fleeing the scene. The person was transferred to the Eduardo Arredondo Daza Hospital, La Nevada headquarters, where he was admitted without vital signs.
The victim, known in the community as 'la Peli', was a trans woman of Venezuelan nationality, who had arrived in the capital of Cesar approximately three months ago and was carrying out informal activities in the area at the time of the attack.
After the crime, Yuliana Ángel Sanabria, director of the Prisma Movimiento association and defender of the rights of the sexually diverse population and women in all their diversities, said that this event cannot be considered isolated. "This should set off alarm bells. In the same sector, the murder of another woman had already occurred. It is urgent that security councils have a focus on the inclusion and participation of human rights defenders," she said.
Ángel Sanabria warned that, although there are actions contemplated in the development plans, these do not translate into real protection measures. "Today we see that women and LGBTIQ+ people are not subject to effective protection by local administrations. The actions remain in figures and not in concrete strategies that prevent violence," he said.
The social leader called on the territorial authorities to strengthen security policies with a differential approach, while warning about the risks faced by women from all social contexts. "Not only are trans women in danger; today all women, in their diversities, are at risk," she emphasized.
The defender also indicated that, for security reasons, the organizations have not been able to travel to the sector where the crime occurred, and that they are waiting for official information from the Ombudsman's Office and the Metropolitan Police, with whom they are accompanying the case, including the corresponding humanitarian management because (she) was a migrant.
Meanwhile, the National Police reported that units of the SIJIN and the quadrant surveillance model are advancing in the collection of material evidence and in the investigations, in coordination with the Attorney General's Office, to clarify the motives for the homicide and identify those responsible.
