Mel died in hospital soon after driving himself there while suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
A 25-year-old Jackson resident who drove to a hospital Monday after suffering multiple gunshot wounds later died.
Mel Groves, identified as a transgender man by friends on Facebook, collapsed while getting out of the vehicle at Merit Health Hospital, JPD spokesperson Sam Brown said in an email Monday. Groves was transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he died.
Police are trying to determine where the shooting took place, as well as the motive and potential suspects, Brown said in the email.
Mel was actively involved with The Knights & Orchids Society, a southern centred grassroots start up founded and led by black, queer, transgender, and gender non-conforming people supporting gender justice and LGBTQ visibility. His Facebook profile is https://www.facebook.com/mrgroves27.
