Sage died by suicide. Reportedly bullying may have been a factor in his death.
Sage David Quigley was born on March 22, 2000, and passed away from suicide on March 2, 2015. At the time of his passing, he lived in Carlsbad, CA, and was a 9th grade student at San Dieguito Academy. He had previously gone by the names David and Sam.
Sage was known for having a vivid sense of humor, leading to his friends giving him the loving nickname "Plant Meme". He was known for being very kind and supportive of others. He loved witchy things like horoscopes, tarot cards, crystals, and incense, loved aesthetic blogs, coffee and houseplants. He liked animation, ranging from anime like Madoka Magica and Attack on Titan to animated films such as Disney's Frozen. He enjoyed a lot of music, and some of his favorite artists included Steam Powered Giraffe, Modest Mouse, and Bring Me the Horizon. He had made artwork and makeup looks based on these artists.
Sage was an artist. He played the ukulele and performed covers of many songs which he published on his Soundcloud. He made a lot of visual art and shared several of his drawings with his friends. Sage did a lot of fashion and makeup work. He frequently changed his hair color, did dynamic and striking makeup looks, and dressed in creative fashion styles, often accessorized with jewelry and flower crowns.
One of Sage´s main artistic hobbies was cosplay and costume design. He was highly involved in the SanDiegoStuck Cosplay group where he attended several events dressed as the character Roxy Lalonde from the webseries Homestuck. He did face paint inspired by deer, the robots, and some of his other favorite fictional characters. His friends say he would wear these costumes to school on regular days.
Sage was described by his friends as a "community pillar" for local LGBTQ youth. He was highly involved in San Dieguito Academy´s GSA and regularly attended events at the North County LGBTQ Resource Center. Some of his friends say he was essential in the process of accepting their own identities.
Following his passing, many people who knew him posted tributes on social media using the hashtags #420SageIt and #HisNameWasSage. Sage was the first of four reported suicides of transgender teens in San Diego County in 2015, followed by Taylor Alesana, Kyler Cade Prescott, and Emmett Black Castle.
Sage is buried under his deadname in Miramar National Cemetery alongside his mother.
