James was beaten with beer bottles, sexually assaulted with a broom handle, strangled with an electrical cord and then drowned in a bathtub.
His body was later set on fire in a trash can behind a church.
The charred remains of 17-year-old James Jerome Mack were discovered by church workers Monday morning.
Homicide detectives believe he was killed Sunday night after visiting someone at a Buffalo apartment and getting involved in a card game. At some point, the five people turned on Mack and took turns beating and sexually assaulting him before strangling him, police said.
Police said the group then put his body in a trash can and wheeled it behind a church, where they set it on fire.
Arrested on charges of second-degree murder and sexual assault were William Lauderdale, 20; Terry Mixon, 19; and Anthony Giles, Kareemaha Luper and Antonio Walker, all 18.
