Mari disappeared after leaving work on the night of Wednesday 8th January. Subsequently, three men were arrested and one of them confessed to killing her.
Her body has not yet been found.
A [trans woman] disappeared after leaving work on Wednesday night (8), in Bairro Lixá, in Santo Antônio de Leverger, 35 km from Cuiabá. Mari de Bastos Lima worked as a pizzaiola during the night.
Friends of the 37-year-old [trans woman] Mari de Bastos Lima, who has been missing for 14 days, are organizing for next week a demonstration in Santo Antônio de Leverger, 35 km from Cuiabá, to demand agility in the investigation of the case.
The Civil Judicial Police of Santo Antônio de Leverger opened a preliminary investigation report (AIP) to investigate the disappearance of [deadname] Bastos, known by the social name of Mari, which occurred in the municipality. The police report was registered on January 8. During the investigation, police officers from the Santo Antônio de Leverger Police Station obtained images of the surveillance cameras of a commercial establishment that showed the victim in the company of two people before her disappearance.
The two companions seen in the images were identified and interviewed, but did not provide information which could clarify Mari's disappearance. Other witnesses related to the victim were also interviewed. However, the police have yet to find any concrete evidence of Mari's location.
Three men were arrested on Friday afternoon (24) suspected of killing [trans woman] Mari de Bastos Lima, 37, who has been missing for 16 days in Santo Antônio do Leverger (28 kilometers from Cuiabá). At this point, steps are being taken to locate Mary's body.
According to information, one of the detainees has already said that the other two buried the victim's body and indicated the location. However, the three deny responsibility for the crime.
Mari has been missing since January 8, when she left the pizzeria where she worked. Since then, she has not been seen at home or at work.
A friend said that she lived alone, was from Maranhão and moved to Mato Grosso almost 10 years ago.
A body was found in July, but has not yet been positively identified.
A body found on the side of a road in Santo Antônio de Leverger, 35 km from Cuiabá, which could belong to Mari de Bastos Lima, 37, has not yet been identified and buried. It turns out that DNA testing cannot be performed because Mari's family who lives in Maranhão cannot afford to travel to Mato Grosso to give samples of genetic material.
The Civil Police reported that the identification of the bones found will only be possible with the analysis of genetic material or the dental arch.
According to the Civil Police, searches were made for dental records of appointments that Mari could have performed, however, no information was found that could contribute to the identification of the body.
Given this, the police sought the assistance of the victim's family to collect genetic material, however, the family cannot afford to travel.
Mari's body was finally found on 9th July 2020 but not confirmed to be hers unti 1st April 2021 when the results of a DNA examination became avaaible.
